...is the only way a hipster is getting one of these things new.

I can think of more than a handful of people that work in and around the Ft Meade area in Maryland that are 1) hipsters and 2) able to afford a $43k car.

Most of the hipsters I know are startup/software types...for many of them $40k is the bottom of their price range.

At this point hipsters have become a very weird thing. Where I live 50% of them are as materialistically described, the other 50% work in IT or some other rather good job for my country. three weeks ago one of the hipsters I know just bought a 225d at almost $50k...

Does hanging out in starbucks with a typewriter really pay that well? I’m in the wrong business if so.

How do you define a “hipster,” though? Does being a hipster preclude one from having a lucrative job?

I thought hipsters would abhor the idea of owning a car, and would preach about vegan diets and the merits of cycling and protecting the environment...

I think you’ve got the idea that all hipster are baristas, when a number of them are successful professionals like my sister, who makes six figures at the tender age of 29. If I were single and lived in a one-bedroom apartment I could afford an $800 car payment. It’s all about priorities.

True. I know of two A3 owners and one owner is 79 and the other is 56.

Could I afford an $800 car payment? Maybe.
Do I have any interest in an $800 car payment? Absolutely not.

Payment on financing $50k is $750 for 72 mo (@2.5%) or $660 for 84 mo (@3%).
For somebody making $100k+ / yr in a STEM job (the target market for this car), either of those is easily doable with a minimal amount down, if any.

I get the point of this post, but repectfully disagree. I work with plenty of hipsters, mid-to-late-20s, that could afford one of these.

Yup, should also be noted that the “20%” rule is bullshit.

I like the impractical nice car idea, but the apartment part if I made six figures... Hell no. Though I’ve met tons of people who do just that and are content. Different strokes.

It’s just not sensible in any way. The idea is to not make a stupid purchase, not live by arbitrary percentages.

It has no meaning. Apparently hipster = anyone mid 20s to early 30s, has a beard, maybe likes the color brown for his shoes. In other words, most white men between 25 and 35.
I believe he is referring to “techies.”

10 or 15-year car loan? I sure some one will offer that to a hipster....you’ll only be upside down for the first 9 years.

In the end, it just depends on the person and what they’re comfortable doing.
I personally don’t like financing cars, my next car purchase will be an exception.

My sister is a hipster and is a nurse with a BSN making good money. She’s very frugal and bought a used Mazda 3 hatchback tho. Her friends all ride fixies.

The idea of financing for myself gives me anxiety. I would describe my income as “slightly better than buying old Toyotas,” but really the bills just add up and eat into that dough. Garbage, water, sewer, power, home security, homeowner’s insurance, property taxes, mortgage, internet, credit card, auto insurance, health insurance, even our little Netflix account. [clears throat] aaaand something something student loans [coughs] but yeah. I would love a nice car but certainly not to pay for one.

Yup, it’s pretty amazing to see how fast stuff like that adds up.
If I traded the Jetta and stuck a nice down payment down, I’d be able to finance a new/used Tacoma TRD Offroad pretty easily without hurting for money. But if I had more financial responsibilities, I would definitely not be in the position to do so.

Like I said, priorities. I’ve met people that own million dollar homes (median in MD is $280K) driving Passats, and then people living in Glen Burnie apartments that drive new 5-Series.
